The Seals of Kalk Bay

One day I was sitting on quay at Kalk Bay harbour sketching one of the boats when this huge Cape Fur Seal launched out of the water next to me. If I had leaned over I have touched it. This would not have been a great idea. Although they hang out near where the locals clean the fish from the boats, they remain wild animals and a bite would be a serious affair. He was as surprised as me I think. So we regarded each other for a while.

Then we both relaxed. He started scratching himself, which always looks a little strange because I think their claws are high up on their flippers.

I took a couple of photos and then he scootched around me to lie in the sun with his harem.
